Heartbreak In Benue: Father Loses Five Children In Tragic Boat Accident

A devastating tragedy has struck Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State as a middle-aged man lost five of his six children in a fatal boat accident that occurred on Sunday evening.

According to Ireporter Online, the family was returning home from their farm when their canoe capsized on the river near Obagaji community. Sources revealed that the father and his children had gone to harvest cassava earlier in the day before the tragic mishap happened midstream.

Out of the seven occupants on board—the father and his six children—only the man and one of the children managed to survive. Local divers and volunteers reportedly rushed to the scene for a rescue operation, but their efforts came too late to save the five children.

A resident identified as Ameh described the atmosphere in the community as one of deep sorrow, noting that the incident has plunged the entire area into mourning.

Confirming the heartbreaking event, the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin James, said the family had gone to harvest crops when their canoe capsized, leading to the deaths of the children. He noted that the canoe was overloaded, a factor believed to have contributed to the accident.

James added that the mother of the children, who did not accompany them on the trip, was in shock upon receiving the tragic news. He described the loss as “devastating and unfortunate” and extended his condolences to the bereaved family, urging residents to always observe water safety measures.

Frequent boat mishaps have continued to claim lives across riverine communities in Benue State, particularly in Agatu, Logo, and Buruku areas. In 2024, about 14 mourners perished in a similar incident in Logo LGA, while 20 traders, mostly women and children, died in another boat disaster in Agatu the same year.

Residents lament that despite these recurring tragedies, many local ferries still operate without life jackets or proper safety oversight. As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command has not issued an official statement, while community leaders are appealing to the government to enforce stricter safety regulations and provide safer boats for residents.
