Paraded alongside 16 other individuals in EboKidnapping nyi State, Michael recounted his harrowing journey from unsuspecting merchant to reluctant accomplice in a high-stakes abduction plot targeting US returnees during the festive season.
Speaking at the Ebonyi State Police Command headquarters in Abakaliki, Michael disclosed the chilling details of his involvement in the kidnapping, orchestrated by his once-trusted customer, the Fulani herdsman.
According to Michael, the herdsman, known as Alhaji, initially approached him under the guise of a routine business transaction. Little did Michael know that this seemingly innocent encounter would lead him down a path of darkness and despair.
Recalling the pivotal moment, Michael revealed how Alhaji, accompanied by his cattle, visited his shop on December 13, 2023. In a fateful twist, Alhaji proposed a dubious opportunity for employment in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, promising lucrative earnings in exchange for laborious work.
Trusting in the false promises of his customer-turned-captor, Michael agreed to accompany Alhaji to Afikpo, unaware of the impending danger lurking in the shadows. Upon arrival, Michael found himself thrust into a nightmare scenario, isolated in a thick forest with Alhaji and his cohorts.
The true intentions of his captor became horrifyingly clear when Alhaji unveiled a sinister arsenal of weapons, including a gun, signaling the commencement of their criminal enterprise.
Despite his coerced participation, Michael maintains his innocence in the violent ordeal, emphasizing that no lives were taken by their group. However, the traumatic experience has left an indelible mark on his conscience, as he grapples with the repercussions of his unwitting involvement in the heinous crime.
As authorities continue their investigation into the kidnapping saga, Michael’s testimony serves as a cautionary tale for traders and civilians alike, highlighting the dangers of misplaced trust and the deceptive allure of ill-gotten gains. In a world fraught with peril, vigilance and discernment remain essential virtues to safeguard against the predatory schemes of those who seek to exploit the vulnerable for their own nefarious ends.
“I asked him what we were going to do with a gun, he asked me: ‘I think you said you were looking for money? This is the time we are going to look for the money.’
