The landlord, Alhaji Dauda Lamidi, who survived the incident, lost his wife, one child, and three grandchildren. Recounting the ordeal, he said:
“Though I built the house 40 years ago, I never expected such a collapse. I had just returned from the restroom when everything crumbled.”
Funmilayo Oyedele, who lost her seven-year-old son, tearfully described how her world came crashing down as she prepared him for school that fateful morning.
Another victim, Mr. Bukayo Aderele, a relative of a family of three who died, spoke of his shock, saying:
“I received the news over a call. The mother, father, and their daughter were all buried under the rubble.”
The landlord’s daughter, Tawakalitu Lamidi, and others have called on the Oyo State Government for support.
“We are homeless and helpless. We plead for assistance to cover medical bills and find shelter,” she said.
Neighbors described the landlord as a kind-hearted man who treated mentally unstable individuals in his home, offering them care and a path to recovery.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that 10 people died immediately, with the toll later rising to 13. National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) teams rescued five individuals from the rubble and provided medical assistance to survivors.
The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, expressed condolences to the victims and urged a thorough investigation.
“This incident highlights the need for regulatory agencies to enforce proper building standards to prevent future tragedies,” the monarch stated.
Meanwhile, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, stressed the importance of infrastructure safety and called for integrity tests on aging structures in densely populated areas.
As the dust settles, Ibadan mourns the lives lost while calling for accountability to prevent similar occurrences.
