I Was Barred From Performing Because I Spoke Yoruba’ – Asake
Nigerian music star, Asake, born Ahmed Ololade, has opened up about the obstacles he encountered at the start of his career, revealing that some show promoters turned him down because he performed predominantly in Yoruba.
According to Ireporter Online, the ‘Sungba’ hitmaker made the disclosure during an interview with Famous TV, where he reflected on his journey to prominence and attributed his success to resilience, consistency, and unwavering self-belief. He explained that several promoters initially declined to book him for performances due to his preference for singing in Yoruba, a decision that posed a significant challenge in his formative years.
Despite the setbacks, Asake said he remained steadfast in his artistic identity and refused to alter his sound or language to gain acceptance. He expressed gratitude to God for the grace to persevere, noting that his determination has ultimately paid off. The singer stated that although many doors were once closed to him, he chose to remain focused and confident in his craft, adding that he is now proud of how far he has come.
In a related development, Damilola Marshall, daughter of Fuji icon King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, has dismissed speculation linking her romantically with Asake. The rumours emerged after both shared a photo taken at an event, accompanied by a caption that read “Mr Money and Mrs Money,” which fueled online reactions.
However, Damilola clarified via her Instagram page that the viral image was taken during her first meeting with the singer and does not indicate any romantic involvement between them.
