According to Ireporter Online, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday, May 6, held a strategic meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, SAN, alongside senior officials of the commission at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, over security preparations for upcoming elections in Nigeria.

The discussions centered on measures to guarantee peaceful, credible, and secure electoral processes, with particular focus on the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle governorship elections, forthcoming bye-elections, and the 2027 General Elections. The INEC delegation, which included national commissioners from various geopolitical zones, emphasized the need for proactive security planning, specialised training for security personnel, and strengthened inter-agency collaboration to address emerging security threats. The commission also called for increased protection and inclusion of vulnerable groups such as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), ensuring they can fully participate in the electoral process without fear or intimidation.

In response, the IGP assured that the Nigeria Police Force had commenced comprehensive preparations, including intelligence mapping to detect and prevent potential threats to the electoral process. He noted that the Force was prioritising measures to curb political violence, voter intimidation, cult-related activities, and misinformation capable of disrupting elections. Disu further disclosed that plans were underway to ensure the secure movement of electoral materials and personnel, while officers deployed for election duties would undergo training on rules of engagement, human rights, and professional conduct. He warned that any officer found culpable of misconduct would face disciplinary action, reaffirming the Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process in collaboration with INEC and other stakeholders.
