Ikeja Electric Cautions Lagos Residents Over Unauthorized Constructions Near Power Lines

According to Ireporter Online, Ikeja Electric Plc has issued a stern warning to residents and business owners in Lagos regarding the rising number of illegal structures and commercial activities beneath high-voltage power lines, describing the trend as a serious safety hazard with potentially fatal consequences.

The electricity distribution company cautioned that erecting buildings, operating workshops, or running shops within designated Right-of-Way corridors exposes individuals to extreme risks, including electrocution, fire outbreaks, and severe injuries—even without direct contact with live cables. The company further emphasized that these dangers escalate during the rainy season, when wet conditions increase the likelihood of electrical accidents.

In a public notice released on Monday, Ikeja Electric highlighted that several locations across Lagos continue to experience repeated encroachments on transmission and distribution corridors, naming areas such as Shogbesan Street in Alimosho and AIT Road in Alagbado. The company stressed that such activities violate Lagos State safety regulations, as Right-of-Way corridors are strictly reserved for power infrastructure and are not intended for residential, commercial, or industrial use.

The company warned that individuals ignoring the directive risk immediate demolition of illegal structures, loss of property without compensation, and potential legal action. Residents and traders were advised against building kiosks, shops, or stalls under or near 11kV distribution lines, as well as 33kV, 132kV, and 330kV transmission lines, and were urged to relocate promptly if already occupying such areas.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, Ikeja Electric stated it would continue collaborating with relevant authorities to prevent unsafe practices and avoidable accidents linked to power infrastructure. The company appealed to Lagosians to prioritise safety and adhere to regulations to protect lives and property.
