Imo State University Staff Union Calls For Indefinite Strike Over Delayed Salaries

The Imo State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has launched an indefinite strike effective September 20, 2024, to address long-standing grievances.

In a statement from Chairperson Comrade Odinakachukwu Ejiogu and Secretary Comrade Lazarus Chikwendu, the union outlined their demands, including an end to promotion without financial benefits since 2016, salary disparities compared to other institutions, delays in staff assessment, selective salary payments, and unpaid salary arrears.

Additionally, ASUU-IMSU is calling for the resolution of issues such as unpaid earned academic allowances since 2009, pension deductions that have not been remitted since May 2016, and the inclusion of IMSU in the Treasury Single Account. The union also seeks better university funding and the preservation of university autonomy.

The union highlighted that despite previous attempts to engage with the university administration, including a 21-day notice issued on July 18, no actionable response was received. Ejiogu has appealed for public understanding and support as they strive for improved conditions at the university.
