Inside The Reasons Jonathan Cannot Win In 2027

According to Ireporter Online, political analysts have cast doubt on the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan securing victory in the 2027 presidential election should he decide to re-enter the race. The position was expressed during an interview with Daily Trust by analysts Jide Ojo and Prof. Saleh Dauda, who both maintained that the former president stands little to no chance in the next general election.

The analysts’ remarks followed renewed calls from some youth groups urging Jonathan to consider a return to the presidential contest in 2027. However, Jide Ojo argued that such calls may be politically motivated, suggesting they are aimed at weakening the South’s political cohesion ahead of the polls. He noted that since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has largely stayed away from partisan politics, focusing instead on peace-building initiatives across Africa and humanitarian engagements through his foundation.

Ojo questioned the rationale behind drawing the former president back into active politics, stating that Jonathan has chosen a non-partisan path in recent years. He further argued that Jonathan’s chances of success were extremely slim, citing a lack of a current political structure or support base. According to him, the former president has not been politically active since 2016 and may find it difficult to secure a viable platform as party primaries approach.

He also suggested that some political actors may be interested in Jonathan’s return not because of genuine support, but to fragment voting patterns in the southern region. Ojo questioned under which political party Jonathan would contest, noting the tight timeline leading up to party primaries.

Similarly, Prof. Dauda advised the former president to steer clear of any return to active politics, stressing that the current political environment in Nigeria does not favour his comeback. He described the idea of Jonathan’s 2027 ambition as unrealistic, stating that his chances of winning are effectively nonexistent given prevailing political dynamics.

When further pressed on the matter, Dauda reaffirmed his stance, maintaining that under the current structure of Nigerian politics, Jonathan’s electoral prospects would be extremely unlikely.
