Speaking at a book launch in Abuja on Saturday, Shettima emphasized the importance of striking a balance between personal integrity and commitment to truth, urging media professionals to focus on serving the greater good.
“There is a clear difference between antagonizing the government and speaking truth to power. The latter is driven by noble principles aimed at serving humanity, while the former is often a self-serving act that fades into irrelevance,” he stated.
The Vice President stressed the crucial role of the media in shaping a nation’s conscience, calling on journalists to maintain their courage and integrity.
“To build a nation that aspires to an ideal state, the intellectual class, particularly journalists, must serve as the conscience of the country. No political leader can excel beyond the scope of knowledge at their disposal,” Shettima remarked.
He highlighted the need for media professionals to act as watchdogs and advisors for political institutions, ensuring a balanced and informed society.
“True courage lies in the ability to stand by the truth, even in the face of opposition. The rush to join smear campaigns, despite superior facts, is not courage but cowardice. Integrity is what distinguishes genuine bravery from opportunistic behavior,” Shettima added.
