International Hunt Ends: Nigerians Who Escaped Nepal Jail Captured In India

Two Nigerian nationals who reportedly escaped from a Nepalese prison during recent anti-government protests have been arrested by operatives of India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), the country’s paramilitary force.

According to reports, the suspects were apprehended on Saturday in Jainagar, Bihar State, while attempting to cross into India. They were said to be among several inmates—both locals and foreigners—who broke out of detention facilities in Nepal following violent demonstrations that have shaken the Himalayan nation in recent weeks.

A security source disclosed that dozens of fugitives had been intercepted at the border over the past few days after escaping various prisons in Nepal. The SSB confirmed that more than 79 escapees, including other foreign nationals, have so far been arrested across Indian states bordering Nepal.

Authorities explained that the intensified security clampdown was necessary due to the porous nature of the India-Nepal border, which stretches 1,751 kilometres across 20 districts in five states and remains largely unfenced.

The arrests have once again drawn attention to the recurring involvement of Nigerian nationals in cross-border crimes across Asia, a trend that continues to trouble law enforcement agencies.

In August, Indian police in Kozhikode City arrested eight Nigerians over alleged drug trafficking. Investigations revealed that the suspects played significant roles in a wider syndicate operating across India. Working with a state-level task force, police uncovered a synthetic drug production unit in Gurugram, Haryana, with support from security teams in Delhi and Haryana.
