Iyabo Obasanjo: I’ll ‘Fight’ For APC Ticket In 2027 Ogun Guber
According to Ireporter Online, Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has affirmed that she will not step aside for any aspirant in the 2027 Ogun State governorship race. Speaking on Saturday during a media briefing at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, she emphasized her readiness to contest and her commitment to use every legitimate political means to secure the ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dismissing speculations that she might withdraw in favor of another candidate, Obasanjo stated that her participation is aimed at winning. “I will compete with everybody in the field, and I will do everything within my power to get the party ticket. I’ll do consultations and everything necessary,” she said.
Her declaration comes amid increasing political realignments in Ogun State, with aspirants intensifying consultations within party structures and across local government areas. Obasanjo also highlighted the historic opportunity for Ogun State to produce Nigeria’s first elected female governor in 2027.
Though she did not mention specific rivals, she stressed that her ambition is grounded in service and development rather than symbolism, expressing confidence in her chances within the APC. Responding to claims that she lacks grassroots connection, Obasanjo rejected the narrative, highlighting her extensive outreach during previous campaigns. “When I campaigned for the Senate, there was no remote village in Ogun Central Senatorial District that I did not touch. The grassroots is actually where my strength is as a politician,” she said.
Obasanjo also addressed her prolonged absence from frontline politics, noting that her time abroad provided valuable exposure to governance models in other countries, including municipal management, taxation systems, and public service delivery. She added that having established a professional career before entering politics, she views public office as an opportunity to promote development rather than as a permanent job.
