Jonathan Hails Adoke’s Bravery Amid OPL 245 Saga, Condemns Political Persecution
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the ordeal faced by former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, over the controversial OPL 245 oil deal as a “global manhunt,” lauding his courage and resilience in presenting his side of the story.
Speaking through former Senate President Pius Anyim at the public presentation of Adoke’s memoir “OPL 245: Inside Story of the $1.3 Billion Nigerian Oil Block” in Abuja on Thursday, Jonathan said the book symbolized vindication, truth, and the endurance of justice under intense persecution.
“The author of this memoir, Mr. Bello Adoke, was the attorney-general at the time. He was hunted across the globe. But today, he is alive and here to tell his story,” Jonathan stated.
He criticized what he termed as a political witch-hunt by the succeeding administration, noting that many of his key officials were targeted after his tenure ended in 2015.
“This may appear as just a book launch to some, but to others, it is a celebration of triumph over persecution,” Jonathan remarked, applauding Adoke’s determination to set the record straight.
The former president emphasized that the book was not written to attack anyone but to promote truth, justice, and historical clarity. He reiterated his long-standing belief that no society could progress without fairness and due process.
“It is universally accepted that any nation that fails to promote justice and fairness will neither enjoy peace nor achieve progress,” Jonathan said.
He also used the occasion to advise public office holders on the fleeting nature of power, urging them to embrace purpose, truth, and accountability while in service.
“Power belongs to God. Those who are privileged to serve must see it as an opportunity to advance justice and fairness,” he stressed.
Jonathan concluded with praise for Adoke’s bravery in telling his own story and contributing to national history.
