The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of Vice President Kashim Shettima. This warning follows the abrupt cancellation of Vice President Shettima’s planned appearance at the Commonwealth Summit in Samoa. The cancellation occurred after an unexpected incident at JFK Airport in New York, where the aircraft suffered significant damage after colliding with a foreign object during a stopover.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, explained that the aircraft’s windscreen and other vital components were damaged, disrupting the Vice President’s travel arrangements.
In a statement from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Speaker Lawan urgently called on the Federal Government to acquire a new aircraft for Vice President Shettima. He emphasized that the current aircraft has been involved in several incidents recently, endangering the Vice President’s safety and raising concerns about the reliability of the aircraft.
Lawan stated, “I want to express my sympathy to the Nigerian Government, particularly the office of the Vice President, his crew, and staff over the unfortunate incident at JFK Airport in New York. I am grateful to Allah for saving the precious life of our dear Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and everyone on board the ill-fated plane. I urge the Nigerian government to request a thorough and timely investigation from the United States government regarding the incident that affected the Vice President’s plane at one of the world’s most secure locations.
“The life of the Vice President, along with his crew and officials, is at risk while using the old and faulty presidential aircraft. Therefore, it is imperative to acquire a new aircraft for Senator Kashim Shettima to prevent future air mishaps.”
