JUST IN: Cardinal Onaiyekan ‘Attacked’ Over Statement On 2023 Elections

John Cardinal Onaiyekan
Mr. Charles Idahosa, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has expressed his disagreement with Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan’s characterization of the 2023 general election as the worst in Nigeria’s history.
According to reports, Cardinal Onaiyekan had recently stated that while there have been flawed elections in the past, the flaws in the last election were unprecedented.

Charles Idahosa
Speaking to journalists in Benin-city, the capital of Edo State, Idahosa argued that the 2023 elections were among the best in the country.
He pointed out that the election produced unexpected outcomes and brought about a new diversity in the National Assembly, with seats won by not less than eight different political parties in the two chambers.
Idahosa further suggested that Onaiyekan’s statement was likely sponsored by one of the opposition parties, timed strategically ahead of an anticipated ruling by the Presidential Election Tribunal, which the opposition parties were likely to lose.
Expressing disappointment, Idahosa criticized the Archbishop, stating that his remarks were an embarrassment to Christians, given his influential position in Christendom.
He pointed out that as someone who has been involved in politics for over 40 years, he, along with others who participated, can attest to the fairness of the election.
Idahosa provided examples to support his argument, citing instances where prominent figures like Tinubu lost in Lagos, and even President Buhari lost in his home state of Katsina.
He argued that if the election was rigged, those figures would not have faced such outcomes.
Additionally, he highlighted the representation of eight political parties in the National Assembly as evidence of the election’s diversity and fairness.
In conclusion, Idahosa felt that Cardinal Onaiyekan should have refrained from commenting on the election, as his statement showed a bias and undermined the credibility of the election process.
