Scheduled to kick off from June 14 to July 14, Euro 2024 will witness Italy defending their championship against formidable opponents from across Europe. With France, England, and Portugal emerging as frontrunners in the eyes of most bookmakers, de la Fuente acknowledged these powerhouse nations as strong favorites for the tournament.
However, while acknowledging the caliber of these contenders, de la Fuente passionately asserted his belief in the capabilities of his Spanish squad, placing them at the forefront of his favorites list. Despite lacking the same level of individual star power as some of their rivals, de la Fuente emphasized the cohesive strength of his team, attributing their potential success to their unity and collective spirit.
Despite the daunting challenge posed by formidable opponents in their group, including reigning European champions Italy, Croatia, and Albania, de la Fuente expressed unwavering confidence in his players’ ability to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious.
“Spain would be the first place in terms of my favorite, number one,” affirmed the 62-year-old tactician during an interview with Movistar Plus. “We are not inferior to anyone, we are there in contention.”
While acknowledging the formidable reputation of teams like England, Portugal, and France, de la Fuente emphasized the distinct qualities that set his Spanish squad apart, underscoring their strength as a cohesive unit.
“Maybe we don’t have as many individual stars – though we still have very good players – but we are stronger as a team,” he concluded, exuding confidence in Spain’s collective prowess as they prepare to embark on their Euro 2024 campaign.
