JUST IN: Gabon’s Ousted President Bongo Freed, Told He Is ‘Free’ To Travel
Ali Bongo, the former president of Gabon who was ousted in a coup, has been granted permission to leave the country and travel abroad, according to the leader of the coup that deposed him. General Brice Oligui Nguema made this announcement in a statement broadcast on state television on Wednesday.
“He has freedom of movement… and can travel abroad if he wishes,” stated General Brice Oligui Nguema.

Bongo, who held power for 14 years, had been confined to his residence since the military takeover on August 30. This coup, which occurred less than an hour after Bongo’s party declared his re-election in a vote disputed by the coup leaders, was carried out without any violence.
“Considering his health condition, former President of the Republic Ali Bongo Ondimba is granted freedom of movement. He may choose to travel abroad for necessary medical examinations,” read a press release from Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, who announced this as he took his oath as transitional president on Monday.
Bongo had suffered a severe stroke in October 2018, resulting in significant physical impairment, particularly affecting the movement of his right leg and arm.
