…President Committed to Legacy Projects for National Development: Works Minister Umahi
Stakeholders from Kwara and Niger States have lauded President Bola Tinubu for his decisive move to construct the 1,000-kilometer Sokoto-Badagry superhighway. Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara and Umaru Bago of Niger highlighted the project as a testament to the President’s dedication to fostering significant socioeconomic growth.
In Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, a stakeholders’ engagement session was held to inform the public about the Kwara and Niger sections of the superhighway and to garner support for this and other initiatives by the President. The superhighway will span 188 kilometers through various Kwara communities and 125 kilometers across Niger land.
The event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Works, saw attendance from prominent figures such as Niger State Governor Bago, Kwara Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, federal and state parliamentarians, including Kwara North’s Sadiq Umar, Minister of Youth Development Dr. Jamilah Bio, and various community leaders, industrialists, and civil society organizations.
Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by his deputy Kayode Alabi, praised the project as a bold vision by President Tinubu to enhance national connectivity and economic growth. He emphasized the socioeconomic benefits of the 188-kilometer road segment in Kwara State, which is part of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Project.
Governor Bago encouraged the people of Kwara and Niger to support the federal government and take ownership of the road projects, highlighting that the development brought by the federal government is for their benefit and not land acquisition.
Works Minister David Umahi commended Governors AbdulRazaq and Bago for their support of President Tinubu. He noted that the Ministry has 18 federal projects in Kwara State and plans to prioritize those lagging behind in implementation. Umahi also highlighted ongoing tax credit projects with BUA in Kwara, funded under different mechanisms by the government.
Umahi expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended during the engagement and praised the collaborative efforts of the Ministers of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi SAN, and Dr. Bio in approving the Kaiama-Tesse-Kishi road construction.
The Sokoto-Badagry road project, envisioned for the past 48 years, is finally becoming a reality under President Tinubu’s administration, along with the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, first proposed by Tinubu 25 years ago when he was Governor of Lagos State.
Senate Committee Chairman on Works Barinada Mpigi criticized the abandonment of road projects by contractors after mobilization and warned that the Senate would sanction those who fail to return to the sites promptly.
The engagement session concluded with a strong endorsement of the Sokoto-Badagry superhighway project and a commitment to support its successful implementation.
