Just In: House Of Representatives Clarifies-Misinformation On Regional Government-Bill (Details)

The House of Representatives has issued a statement refuting claims circulating on social media about a bill seeking a return to regional government. Hon. Akintunde Rotimi, the House Spokesman, clarified that there is no such bill before the House, whether as a private member bill or an executive bill.

Rotimi emphasized that the proposal in question has not been presented to the House Committee on Constitution Review as a memoranda. He dismissed insinuations that the House rejected or disowned the bill, asserting that since it was never formally submitted, there was neither disowning nor rejecting it.

In the statement, Rotimi outlined the three main routes for proposing constitutional amendments in the House of Representatives: through a member proposing a bill, through memoranda submitted to the Constitution Review Committee and sponsored by a member, or through an executive bill submitted by the executive arm of government.

He clarified, “Contrary to inaccurate reports suggesting that the House ‘disowned’ or ‘rejected’ the bill, the House has neither disowned nor owned the proposal. The position provided earlier was to inform the public that the proposal is not before the House for consideration at this material time.”

The House reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating a transparent constitution review process that includes broad stakeholder engagement. Rotimi encouraged healthy debates and exchange of ideas while urging accurate reporting by the media to promote national cohesion.

For further information, individuals and groups were directed to contact the House Committee on Constitution Review or visit their official website.
