The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has debunked recent claims made by some aviation enthusiasts regarding undetected aircraft flying over Aso Rock, stating that these allegations are misleading and false. The agency emphasized that the country’s airspace is fully covered by radar, with serviceable stations in Kano, Lagos, Abuja, and Port-Harcourt.

NAMA’s Managing Director, Ahmed Umar Farouk, assured that radar services for terminal and enroute flights are fully operational and provide air navigation services to all airspace users. He explained that the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) system, like any other electronic system, is undergoing continuous upgrades to meet increasing demands for efficient air traffic management.

This response came after a blogger appeared on television claiming an unidentified aircraft was flying around the Presidential Villa in Abuja undetected. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) quickly clarified that there was no security threat to Aso Rock, confirming that the aircraft, later identified as part of Max Air’s fleet, was known to air traffic controllers and was simply using security terminology.

The NCAA had previously issued warnings to aircraft operators to avoid prohibited or restricted areas. Farouk criticized the blogger for not understanding the surveillance systems’ workings, offering to provide accurate information to anyone in need.

NAMA remains dedicated to ensuring safe and efficient air navigation services in Nigeria. Farouk highlighted the importance of civil and military coordination to maintain a secure airspace. Recent discussions between NAMA and the Department of State Services (DSS) emphasized the importance of adhering to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines to prevent airspace violations, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory.

The NAMA boss stressed the need for strict adherence to published no-fly zones to ensure national security, warning that violations could result in severe consequences, including potential military intervention.
