Kenya Opposition Leader Raila Odinga Crowned A Special Osun-Osogbo Elder At An Invite-only Ceremony Held At A “Sacred Grove” Along The Banks Of Osun River? – Fact Emerge

The viral image circulating on social media in September 2023 depicts former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga supposedly being honored as an “elder” in Nigeria.

It has garnered significant attention on Facebook, accompanied by a claim asserting that the ceremony took place in Osun State at an exclusive gathering.

The caption alleges, “RAILA WENT TO NIGERIA TO GET POWERS. Kenya’s veteran Opposition leader Raila Odinga was yesterday evening crowned a special Osun-Osogbo elder at an invite-only ceremony held at a ‘sacred grove’ along the banks of Osun River, Osogbo City, Nigeria.”

The image accompanying this assertion has been digitally altered, incorporating Odinga’s face into a photograph taken in 1977.

The original picture depicts Emperor Jean-Bédel Bokassa during his coronation ceremony in the Central African Republic.

This misinformation has gained traction on various Facebook accounts, with some posts suggesting that Odinga’s visits to certain countries were related to purported witchcraft practices for political empowerment.

The claim can be found elsewhere on Facebook herehereherehere and here.

These allegations emerged predominantly during the 2022 election period and were categorically refuted by Odinga’s political opponents.

A thorough examination, including a reverse image search, conclusively establishes that the circulated image is doctored.

The original photograph was featured in a BBC article in February 2014 and captures a historic event in the Central African Republic, unrelated to Raila Odinga or any event in Nigeria.

It is imperative to rely on verified sources and factual evidence when evaluating such claims, in order to combat the spread of false information and ensure accurate public discourse.
