Labour Party Drama Escalates As Abure Heads To Supreme Court

According to reports, the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri ruled that only the recognised national leadership under Usman has the legal mandate to authorise and initiate legal proceedings on behalf of the Labour Party. The ruling followed a dispute surrounding an appeal that was filed without the endorsement of the party’s recognised national leadership.

Reacting to the judgment, spokesperson for the Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, said the group was dissatisfied with the outcome but would respect the court’s decision while immediately pursuing further legal action at the apex court.

Ifoh expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would overturn the judgment, arguing that matters relating to party leadership remain internal affairs that should primarily be resolved within the political organisation.

He maintained that the Nnewi convention, which produced Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party, remains valid, noting that no court has nullified the outcome of the convention.

The spokesperson further insisted that the Abure-led leadership remains the legally recognised administration of the party and will continue its tenure until 2028.

He stated that the faction believes justice will prevail at the Supreme Court, adding that the party remains committed to defending the legitimacy of its leadership.

The Labour Party has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership dispute, with rival factions laying claim to control of the party’s national structure. The latest legal challenge is expected to determine the direction of the party’s leadership ahead of future political activities.
