Labour Party Member Insists Julius Abure Remains National Chairman Despite INEC’s Position

Avotu Johnson, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has asserted that Julius Abure remains the party’s National Chairman in line with the party’s constitution, despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declining to recognise his leadership.

According to Ireporter Online, Johnson made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he criticized INEC for allegedly overstepping its constitutional role.

He stated that INEC appears to misunderstand its regulatory function, emphasizing that political party leadership issues should be resolved internally by the party, not by external bodies.

“The Supreme Court, in its certified judgment, clearly stated that leadership within political parties is the prerogative of the party itself,” Johnson said. “According to the Labour Party’s constitution, the statutory members — specifically the Chairman and Secretary — have the authority to convene and conduct conventions.”

He further emphasized that Julius Abure’s position is constitutionally valid and reaffirmed the party’s stance on his continued leadership.

This comes amid controversy surrounding INEC’s recent refusal to acknowledge Abure’s chairmanship, leading to growing tensions between the electoral body and the Labour Party.
