A senior government official has taken aim at former presidential candidate Peter Obi, calling his recent reaffirmation of a one-term presidency pledge a “scam.”

The statement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, who criticized Obi’s position in a post shared on social media platform X. Bwala accused the Labour Party figure of political deception, citing claims from a former campaign insider.

“Peter Obi is suffering from identity crisis,” Bwala wrote, referencing an unnamed former aide of Obi. “His latest scam-phrase is ‘I will do a one term.’”

Obi had reignited public debate during the weekend after reiterating a commitment to serve only a single four-year term if elected President, a promise he has maintained since the 2023 election cycle.

“It is within this context that I reiterate my vow: I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct,” Obi stated.

The one-term commitment has attracted both praise and skepticism across Nigeria’s political spectrum, with critics questioning the sincerity and feasibility of such a pledge amid the complex realities of governance.
