Lagos Guber Race Heats Up As Lauretta Onochie Affirms Seyi Tinubu’s Eligibility
Lauretta Onochie, former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has weighed in on the ongoing debate over the eligibility of key figures to contest the Lagos State governorship race in 2027, including President Bola Tinubu’s son,….Lagos Guber Race Heats Up As Lauretta Onochie Affirms Seyi Tinubu’s Eligibility
Seyi, and other prominent politicians.
Onochie addressed concerns surrounding Seyi Tinubu’s potential candidacy, emphasizing that the law does not bar individuals whose parents have held high political offices, such as governors or presidents, from running for state governor. Posting images of the individuals in question—Seyi Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, former Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, ex-Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and Senator Tokunbo Abiru—Onochie called on voters to rely on the law when discussing Lagos State’s future leadership.
She stated: “Let us be guided by the law. The law does not exclude children of governors or presidents from becoming state governors. We cannot have one set of rules for Nigeria and another for Lagos.”
Onochie went on to outline the key legal requirements for gubernatorial candidates, which include being a Nigerian citizen by birth, being at least 35 years old, holding a minimum of a School Certificate, and having a political party’s endorsement. Additionally, disqualification applies to those who have acquired foreign citizenship, served two terms as governor, or committed certain offenses such as fraud or dishonesty.
She concluded, “Our discussions must be grounded in the laws of the land.”
This follows increasing speculation about Seyi Tinubu’s potential candidacy for the 2027 Lagos gubernatorial race. Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, recently affirmed Seyi’s qualifications, citing his dedication and track record as qualifications for leadership. Meanwhile, Femi Gbajabiamila has made it clear that he is currently focused on his role as Chief of Staff to the president and is not campaigning for the governorship position.
