Furniture Frenzy: Humanitarian Minister Explains N300M Allocation Amid Growing Scrutiny
In a recent interview on ireporteronline The Morning Show, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Nigeria’s Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, addressed concerns surrounding his ministry’s….Furniture Frenzy: Humanitarian Minister Explains N300M Allocation Amid Growing Scrutiny
proposal to allocate over N300 million for furniture in the 2025 budget.
Responding to questions about the timing and necessity of such an expense, the minister clarified that the funds were earmarked for critical office infrastructure needed by newly established agencies under his ministry. He explained that these agencies, including the National Social Investment and Poverty Alleviation (NSIPA), lack both office spaces and furniture to carry out their functions effectively.
“We have new agencies like NSIPA that have no office space. We are in the process of relocating them to new offices, and my ministry itself is being moved to the Ministry of Communications, which requires refurbishing,” Yilwatda elaborated. He emphasized that the expenditure would not only equip these new agencies but also furnish his own relocated offices.
Despite the backlash over the substantial allocation for furniture, Yilwatda reassured the public that the majority of his ministry’s 2025 budget – over 99% – will be directed towards direct humanitarian interventions. This includes substantial funding for social programs such as school feeding initiatives, cash transfers, and grants for vulnerable populations.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Prof. Yilwatda as Minister in October 2024, following the suspension of Beta Edu due to allegations of financial mismanagement.
As the government continues to face scrutiny over its budget allocations, Yilwatda remains confident that the overall goals of his ministry, particularly its focus on aiding Nigeria’s most vulnerable, will justify the proposed expenditure.
