Lagos Launches Phase II Of ‘Ounje Eko’ Food Discount Market
The Lagos State Government has announced that Phase II of its ‘Ounje Eko’ Food Discount Market will commence on September 1. The state’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, made the announcement during a news conference at the Alausa Secretariat.
In March, Phase I of the Ounje Eko Food Discount Market was successfully implemented across 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas. The initiative, which also operated in Alausa and Lekki Phase I, provided food items at a 25% discount, benefiting over 250,000 residents.
Given the positive response and the ongoing economic challenges, the government has decided to continue the initiative, expanding it to 64 locations, including universities and major state institutions. The markets will offer discounted food items with digital transactions to ensure smooth and accountable operations.
Commissioner Olusanya emphasized the importance of the initiative in mitigating the impact of rising food prices, which have put essential items out of reach for many households.
The markets will operate from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with specific days allocated to different locations. The initiative also involves collaboration with various agencies to ensure seamless operations and security.
