The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially introduced drones as part of a transformative approach to urban traffic management, enhancing surveillance, public safety, and overall security across the city.

Launched under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the initiative marks a significant shift from conventional traffic control methods to a digitally driven model, reflecting the state’s THEMES+ Agenda.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the move as a “watershed moment” for traffic management in Lagos. He emphasized that the drones will provide real-time aerial monitoring, enabling quicker interventions, minimizing travel disruptions, and improving emergency response.

“This initiative goes beyond the acquisition of equipment; it represents a strategic transformation that positions LASTMA as a leader in digital traffic governance,” Bakare-Oki said. “These drones will enhance safety outcomes, strengthen emergency coordination, bolster security, and foster a more disciplined driving culture.”

He further explained that the technology will allow LASTMA to transition from reactive enforcement to intelligence-driven, predictive operations, all while adhering to strict privacy, ethical, and regulatory standards.

The authority highlighted that the drones would complement existing operations, including the LASTMA Toll-Free Hotline (080000527862), enabling faster responses to accidents, emergencies, and traffic-related incidents.

Bakare-Oki stressed that the deployment demonstrates Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to leveraging technology and innovation as key drivers for a safer and more efficient Lagos. Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, added that LASTMA remains dedicated to continuously innovating solutions to reduce travel time, prevent accidents, and safeguard lives and property across the metropolis.
