Lamido Exposes Root Of PDP Crisis: Northern Divisions And Obasanjo’s Third-Term Plans
Sule Lamido, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and ex-Governor of Jigawa State, has opened up about the challenges currently plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a recent interview, Lamido attributed the party’s...CONTINUE READING…
ongoing issues to divisions among northern leaders dating back to 2007.Lamido, who has been with the PDP since its inception, explained that understanding the party’s history is essential to understanding its current crisis. He traced the party’s roots to the aftermath of the annulled June 12 election, which shattered trust among Nigerians, especially after the unifying win of Moshood Abiola. Lamido explained that the PDP was created to restore national unity, with the symbolic decision to locate the presidency in the South West in a bid to heal the wounds of the past.
Reflecting on the party’s trajectory, Lamido noted that although the PDP made significant strides in uniting the country under Olusegun Obasanjo’s leadership, internal tensions began to surface, particularly as some of Obasanjo’s allies began to oppose his bid for a second term. Lamido recalled that while some believed Obasanjo deserved to serve two terms given his contributions, a third-term attempt was indeed made by Obasanjo, although it ultimately failed.
Lamido also connected the cracks in the north to the party’s current weakness, highlighting how defections and internal strife led to the PDP’s downfall in 2015. Despite the challenges, Lamido is hopeful about the future of the party and confirmed that efforts are underway to revitalize the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections. He assured that they are working discreetly to bring back aggrieved members for the good of Nigeria.
