Lawan Unites Opposition To Stand Behind Tinubu’s Reforms

Former Senate President and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Ahmad Lawan, has called on opposition parties to rise above partisan politics and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda. According to reports, Lawan stressed that national interest should take precedence over political considerations.

Lawan made the remarks in Abuja during a meeting with a delegation from the Yobe State chapter of the City Boy Movement at the National Assembly Complex, as conveyed in a statement released by his Media Adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo. Drawing from his 16-year experience in opposition politics, he encouraged critics to endorse government policies that benefit Nigerians.

“Even if you do not fully agree with the ruling All Progressives Congress, supporting initiatives that improve the country is essential,” he said. Lawan emphasised that Nigeria is at a crucial stage of development that requires collaboration across party lines to achieve meaningful progress.

Describing President Tinubu’s leadership as bold and courageous, Lawan acknowledged that some reforms, though challenging, are necessary to reposition the nation. He highlighted achievements in the security sector, including the passage of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Bill, restructuring of the security architecture, and enhanced allowances for military personnel. These measures, he noted, demonstrate the administration’s commitment to national security and the welfare of armed forces personnel.

Lawan also addressed the state of education, expressing concern over the high number of out-of-school children, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He urged privileged youths to advocate for basic education, noting that increased school enrollment would positively impact security. He highlighted the importance of fully implementing the Universal Basic Education Act and allocating two per cent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund to improve access to education.

The former Senate President commended Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for declaring a state of emergency on education and investing in the sector. He called for sustained unity among stakeholders to advance the state’s development.

Dr. Muhammad Yakubu Hassan, leader of the City Boy Movement delegation, briefed Lawan on the group’s initiatives, including grassroots mobilisation, empowerment programmes, and town hall meetings. The movement plans to launch projects such as “Education for All” and “Health for All,” alongside community-driven initiatives targeting basic needs at the ward level.
