According to Ireporter Online, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for an immediate halt to the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement released over the weekend, the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, described the move as a “legislative coup d’etat” and urged the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, to comply with a High Court interim order preventing the State House of Assembly from pursuing impeachment against Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The injunction, issued by a Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo last Friday, restrained the Chief Judge from receiving or acting on any documents, resolutions, or communications related to the impeachment process from the State Assembly.

Nwauju emphasized that the party has carefully reviewed the circumstances leading to the impeachment attempt, criticizing some lawmakers for allegedly prioritizing personal agendas over the party’s collective interests. He warned that the process represents an unnecessary legislative overreach and could undermine the APC’s stability in the state.

While acknowledging that the Constitution empowers the legislature to conduct impeachment under Sections 129 and 188, Nwauju noted that the determination of “gross misconduct” is highly subjective. He argued that even well-structured allegations against the governor and his deputy remain open to interpretation and public scrutiny.

The APC urged the national leadership to activate mechanisms available under the party’s constitution to prevent further escalation and safeguard the party’s integrity in Rivers State.
