In a conversation with Saturday Beats, Alieke stated, “It’s clear that there are powerful interests at play in this situation. On one side, we have Burna Boy, and on the other, the police appear to be responding based on emotions rather than legal principles. Regardless of personal feelings, a court ruling must be adhered to.”

He continued, “If Burna Boy believes he has been defamed, the appropriate action would be to seek legal recourse through the courts. Instead, he’s using his connections to involve the police.”

In his remarks, Alieke pointed out that the court has yet to address the case substantively, as it was only officially filed in November. He recounted a meeting with Burna Boy after Akpi had been detained for four days, where the Deputy Inspector General of Police was mediating the situation in Abuja. During this meeting, Burna Boy opted not to speak extensively and had his lawyer express that Akpi’s videos had adversely affected his career. The parties ultimately reached an agreement for Akpi to cease making videos about Burna Boy, in addition to a request for a public apology, which Alieke asserts he drafted himself.

Alieke also raised concerns regarding his client’s health and treatment while in custody. “His family is devastated and traumatized. His mother and brother contact me nearly every night. Yet, despite the circumstances, Akpi remains in good spirits, though he’s been unwell. When I saw him two days ago, I insisted that the police take him to the hospital, as he hasn’t been eating due to a lack of proper meals.
