Are you the leader of the Pain and Pleasure Band?

While I’m not the leader, I am one of the lead vocalists. Our group has a structure where leadership doesn’t necessarily dictate who performs on stage. We have a designated leader who manages different ministries. Since we have 19 members, we split into smaller groups when performance dates overlap to ensure we can attend to all engagements.

How did you come across the group?

The band has been around for about 25 years, established by several blind individuals. Some original members have moved on to different paths, including government jobs, but we continue to pursue the vision. I joined the band in 2013 after being informed about it by a friend.

What were you doing before joining the group?

Before joining the band, I realized I had a talent for singing, which I believe was a divine gift compensating for my blindness. I was also involved in ministry at the Christ Apostolic Church in Ilaro, Ogun State.

Where do you hail from?

I come from Agada in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, born on January 1, 1987. I live in Ilaro with my family, but our band’s base is in Ikorodu, Lagos. We rehearse together the day before our performances to perfect our skills.

How did you lose your sight?

I became blind at the age of two due to complications from measles. Despite my parents’ best efforts to seek treatment, my vision could not be restored. We are grateful for how far we’ve come.

Did you receive an education growing up?

Yes, I attended the School for the Blind in Ijebu Igbo and completed my secondary education at Yewa/Egbado College. I started my primary education at the age of 19 in 2006, which took me four years, and I finished secondary school from 2010 to 2016.

What have you been doing since then?

I have been dedicated to my music ministry since I began singing publicly in 2012 and officially joined Pain and Pleasure in 2013. Music is my sole focus and passion.

Despite your visual impairment, how do you perform on stage?

Our incredible abilities come from God, who serves as our guiding light and source of strength. Even our sound engineer is blind, yet he manages our equipment perfectly.

How do you receive performance invitations?

We are grateful to our fans and supporters who invite us. Their belief in us has kept us from resorting to begging. Although we haven’t performed internationally, our music has reached audiences worldwide through social media.

How do you set your performance fees?

Our fees vary based on distance and the current economic situation in the country, but we strive to keep it affordable.

How would you assess the support for PWDs in Nigeria?

While we appreciate the support we’ve received, there is still much room for improvement. I would like to express gratitude to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his efforts in helping people living with disabilities.

What changes are needed to improve the situation for PWDs?

There should be comprehensive support from the government, similar to what exists in countries like the US and the UK, where people with disabilities receive assistance to ease their burdens.

Are you advocating for a special financial aid for PWDs?

Not necessarily a fixed salary, but I believe everything possible should be done to alleviate our challenges and enhance our quality of life. Disability is not a choice, and we deserve assistance.

What are your thoughts on parents who abandon or confine disabled children?

Such attitudes are deeply misguided. I urge parents to embrace their children with love. Those living with disabilities should strive to discover their potential and maintain hope, trusting in God.

As a married man with children, did you face challenges in finding a spouse?

Yes, it was quite challenging, particularly in overcoming familial opposition, especially from my wife’s father. However, ultimately, God facilitated our union.

How long did this opposition last?

The resistance never truly ends, but I am grateful that God has shown His power in our lives, proving skeptics wrong. Much of the concern stemmed from fears about my ability to support a family, a valid concern for any parent.

What message do you have for PWDs, particularly those forced into begging?

Many PWDs resort to begging due to a lack of support and options. It’s essential to recognize that not everyone chooses this path willingly. For those who can find alternative means of survival, I urge them to reject begging. Our challenges do not define us. God is our strength.
