The details obtained indicate that the driver lost control of the bus while trying to evade a team of unauthorized revenue agents.
According to an anonymous eyewitness, the bus was being pursued by the agents when one of them hurled a sizable stone at the vehicle. This unexpected impact caused the driver to suddenly lose control of the bus, leading it to veer off the road and flip over.
All the passengers who were on the bus at the time suffered various injuries, and the driver’s condition was reported to be critical, as stated by the eyewitness.
Gerald Ozoh, the Transition Committee Chairman of Anaocha Local Council, confirmed the accident and declared a temporary prohibition on the collection of any form of revenue within the council area. This measure was implemented pending a thorough investigation aimed at identifying the legitimate revenue agents authorized by the government.
Ozoh, who personally visited the scene of the accident, strongly criticized the activities of unlawful revenue agents operating in the locality. He disclosed that the local police have initiated an inquiry to identify the individuals responsible for this incident.
Furthermore, Ozoh emphasized that the government, under the administration of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, does not endorse any form of illicit revenue collection. He urged the residents to collaborate with the government in putting an end to such practices.
He also urged motorists who travel through the region to comply with the law and promptly report any suspicious revenue-related activities to his office. It was noted that one suspected revenue agent has already been apprehended in connection with the accident.
