Many Women Regret Early Marriage’ – Toke Makinwa

Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has sparked discussions after claiming that many women who got married in their 20s may later regret the decision.

According to Ireporter Online, Makinwa made the statement during a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moment, where she featured Big Brother Naija star Tacha as a guest.

The actress argued that women should take more time to understand themselves before entering marriage, noting that many people are still discovering their identity, goals, and personal choices during their 20s.

Makinwa stated that some women who married at a young age may later realise they made the decision before they were fully prepared, adding that even those still in such marriages might admit they would have approached the decision differently if given another opportunity.

During the conversation, Tacha shared a similar perspective, quoting her mother’s belief that marriage is often viewed differently by those inside and outside the institution, with some people eager to leave while others desire to enter.

Meanwhile, Toke Makinwa has also challenged the perception that modern Nigerian women are primarily motivated by financial benefits when entering relationships.

Speaking on the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the media personality argued that relationships between men and women have historically involved some form of exchange and that the idea of transactional relationships is not a recent development.

Makinwa explained that expectations around financial support and other forms of contribution have existed for generations, adding that the responsibility for such dynamics should not be placed solely on women.

She further suggested that some men contribute to the situation when financial support becomes a major factor in relationships, especially when it is perceived as one of the main things they bring to the partnership.
