Massive Upset: Appeal Court Strips PDP Lawmaker Of Seat, Labour Party CelebratesThe Court of Appeal in Enugu has ousted Hon. Simon Atigwe, the representative for the Igboeze North/Udenu federal constituency in the House of Representatives. The three-member panel, led by Justice Ekanem, concluded that Atigwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not legitimately elected based on the valid votes cast during the rerun election.

In its ruling, the appellate court affirmed the decision made by the House of Representatives tribunal, which had previously removed Atigwe from his position. The court declared Dennis Agbo of the Labour Party as the rightful winner of the rerun election held on February 3, 2024.

Initially, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Atigwe as the victor, stating he received 23,863 votes compared to Agbo’s 23,226 votes.

In a related development, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for calm following the recent court ruling affecting the party’s leadership. In a statement released on Wednesday, Obi mentioned that he, along with Governor Alex Otti and the Labour Party’s Caretaker Chairman and Secretary, met on Tuesday to discuss and assess the implications of the court decision.

Additionally, it was reported that the Federal High Court in Abuja, under Justice Emeka Nwite, ruled on Tuesday that INEC must officially recognize Julius Abure as the legitimate Chairman of the Labour Party.

Responding to the situation, Obi stated that he and his associates would continue to hold discussions and consultations, remaining focused on the critical issues facing the people, emphasizing that the journey to create a new Nigeria will inevitably come with challenges.
