Ministerial Screening: What Transpired When Alake Was Asked To Recite National Anthem
Wednesday witnessed a lively session in the Senate, as Senator Simon Davou Mwadikwon, the Minority Leader, put forward a request to the ministerial nominee, Dele Alake, to recite the second stanza of the national anthem.
Dele Alake, currently serving as President Bola Tinubu’s media aide, was present in the Senate for his screening, during which he faced numerous questions related to culture, tourism, and information.
Alake received praise for his past involvement as one of the pro-democracy activists during the military rule, not just in Lagos, but elsewhere too.

In his address to the lawmakers, he highlighted that Tinubu’s administration is committed to reforming the tourism and culture sectors to positively transform the country, given the chance to serve in that capacity.
During the proceedings, Mwadikwon, representing Plateau North senatorial district, lauded Alake’s accomplishments and then asked him to recite the second stanza of the national anthem.
However, Majority Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central senatorial district, came to Alake’s defense and requested the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to allow his fellow countryman to “take a bow and go.”
This led to a bit of a dramatic moment on the Senate floor, but Akpabio intervened by stating that he, as an adult, could recite any stanza of the national anthem. Consequently, Alake was spared from reciting the national anthem and eventually left the Red Chamber after the acknowledgment and praise he received.
