Niger Crisis: List Of Countries Absent As ECOWAS Defence Chiefs Meet In Nigeria

Today, General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, is leading a meeting of Chiefs of Defence Staff from 15 ECOWAS countries at Defence headquarters in Abuja.

The main topic of discussion among the military leaders is the political situation in the Niger Republic.

Notably absent from the meeting are the Defence Chiefs from Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Guinea Bissau. This absence suggests that these countries oppose ECOWAS’ stance on the Niger Republic.

The Committee of Defence Chiefs will deliberate on the political crisis with the aim of finding a resolution within the 7-day ultimatum issued by ECOWAS leadership last Sunday. The outcome of their discussions could either bring stability to Niger or escalate tensions in the region.

Countries present at the meeting include Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Cote D’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, and Senegal.

During an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government chaired by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Military junta in Niger, demanding a return to the status quo or face potential consequences, including the possibility of military action.
