NAFDAC Dismantles Illegal Skin-Bleaching Network in Kano

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a network of illegal vendors selling unauthorized skin-bleaching creams in Sabon Gari, Kano, leading to the arrest of six individuals.

The enforcement operation came after weeks of monitoring triggered by disturbing social media reports and video evidence showing vendors openly marketing toxic skin products disguised as beauty treatments.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, the agency’s state coordinator, Mr. Kasim Ibrahim, stated that the creams being sold contained harmful and banned substances, often advertised with promises of instant skin-lightening results.

“These products were not just sold discreetly—they were aggressively marketed and glamorized, despite their dangerous content,” Ibrahim explained.

He warned that the use of these creams exposes users to irreversible skin damage, long-term health risks, and in some cases, cancer-causing agents.

“This is beyond vanity; it’s about protecting the health, safety, and dignity of Nigerians, especially women and young people who are being misled,” he said.

NAFDAC conducted undercover operations, including mystery shopping, to collect evidence before executing the raids. Several shops were sealed, and samples have been taken for laboratory testing. Some of the closures will remain permanent pending further investigation.

The arrested suspects face charges related to the distribution of fake or unregistered cosmetic products.

“These individuals were not only breaking the law—they were putting lives at risk for personal gain,” Ibrahim said firmly.

He reiterated that under the leadership of Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC is unwavering in its mission to shield Nigerians from dangerous products, including cosmetics, which are often neglected in regulatory discussions despite widespread usage.

Ibrahim called on the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities. He also expressed gratitude to the media for amplifying awareness and urged continued collaboration as the agency intensifies its clampdown on illegal cosmetics nationwide.
