NAHCON Warns NLC: Don’t Disrupt Hajj-Pilgrimage Amid Strike (Details)

In the midst of ongoing transportation efforts for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) regarding potential disruptions due to its industrial strike action. Naija News reports that 65,500 Nigerians are expected to perform the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia this year, with 38,805 pilgrims already transported via 92 flights.

Fatima Usara, Assistant Director of Public Affairs for NAHCON, released a statement on Monday in Abuja emphasizing the need for the NLC to honor the sensitivity of this “divine devotion” and avoid interfering with the movement of pilgrims. Usara highlighted that disrupting Hajj operations would infringe on the fundamental rights of Muslims to worship and urged the NLC to act with caution.

“Information reaching NAHCON indicates that there are plans by a section of the NLC to disrupt the ongoing Hajj operations,” Usara stated. “This is coming in spite of the initial understanding that Hajj flights would not be affected.”

While acknowledging the NLC’s concerns over the welfare of its members, NAHCON appealed for respect towards the sanctity of Hajj as a significant religious obligation. The commission stressed that any disruption could severely impact the pilgrimage process, especially with the limited time available before the closure of Jeddah and Madinah airports.

NAHCON’s plea underscores the importance of maintaining the smooth operation of Hajj flights, ensuring that intending pilgrims can fulfill their religious duties without hindrance.
