Naira Redesign: Governors On EFCC Watchlist Have Increased – Bawa

Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stated on Thursday that the number of governors on the commission’s watchlist has increased.

He made the announcement while briefing reporters at the State House following his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Bawa declined to say how many governors are currently on their radar, nor did he reveal their identities.

The EFCC boss also stated that the anti-corruption agency is pleased with the redesign of the naira note, explaining that the policy would help the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) control the monies in the system and, as a result, allow for more money to be borrowed.

Bawa also reiterated his belief (as an economics student) that the redesigning of the naira will cause the value of the dollar, which is currently at 890 naira, to fall to 200 naira.

He confirmed that the sting operations against Bureau De Change (BDC) operators were successful, with large recoveries made.

Bawa urged Nigerians once more to embrace the new policy, while also encouraging citizens to use the whistleblower policy.

The anti-graft czar revealed two weeks ago that three serving state governors are being investigated for attempts to launder money through table payment of workers’ salaries.

Though he did not reveal the identities of these governors, the EFCC chief stated that two of them were from the North and the third was from the South.

He stated that intelligence at the agency’s disposal revealed that the three governors had agreed to inject the funds into the system through table payment of their state workers’ salaries.
