National Assembly Faces Backlash Over Pay Scandal Amid Calls for Governance Reforms

National Assembly is grappling with mounting scrutiny over alleged excessive salaries and allowances for its members, amidst calls for urgent reforms in governance. Recent debates and accusations have intensified the spotlight on legislative compensation and its impact on Nigeria’s economy and governance.

Senate Denies Immoral Allowances Claims

In response to recent controversies, the Senate has firmly denied allegations of receiving or setting excessive allowances for its members. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had previously criticized the National Assembly, accusing legislators of immorally fixing their own salaries and allowances, including claims of a N14.4 million allowance per senator.

The Senate’s spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, countered these claims, stating that no senator determines their own salary or benefits. Adaramodu described the accusations as attempts to undermine the legislature through “political hypocrisy.” He emphasized that senators receive salaries as allocated by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMFAC) and do not receive additional perks from the Presidency.

House of Representatives Pay Controversy

Complicating matters, a recent revelation by lawmaker Uzokwe Ifeanyi showed a salary alert of N936,979.53, sparking further debate. The House of Representatives clarified that the standard monthly salary is N600,000, with Ifeanyi’s higher figure attributed to unique circumstances surrounding his late assumption of office.

Akin Rotimi, National Assembly spokesman, explained that Ifeanyi’s salary included allowances due to his delayed start. The House had previously pledged to donate half of their salaries to combat hunger in Nigeria, a commitment they have yet to fully implement. Rotimi assured that administrative delays are the cause of the postponed donation, which will be rectified soon.

Calls for Governance Reforms

Amidst these controversies, the Labour Party’s Peter Obi has called for a deep reflection on Nigeria’s governance issues. Obi emphasized the need for leaders to address public demands, combat poverty, and improve governance. He extended condolences to those affected by recent protests and urged leaders to act decisively to resolve pressing national issues.

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) also weighed in, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address wasteful spending and implement reforms that prioritize transparency and public welfare. HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, highlighted that the recent protests underscored a demand for meaningful changes to reduce the excessive cost of governance.

Bishop Akinfenwa’s Appeal for Leadership Reform

In a related development, Most Rev Joseph Akinfenwa of the Ibadan Diocese called on Nigerian leaders to lead by example. During a funeral service, Akinfenwa urged leaders to reduce their salaries and eliminate unnecessary expenses, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in addressing the nation’s challenges. He condemned the current state of hardship and hunger, advocating for leaders to adopt solutions that truly benefit the populace.
