NDLEA Destroys 1.6 Million Kilograms Of Illicit Drugs Seized On Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed approximately 1.6 million kilograms of confiscated illicit substances from Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo States. The destruction exercise took place at a secured site in Ipara, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State.

Among the narcotics destroyed were 123 kg of cocaine, 46.8 kg of heroin, 1.4 million kg of cannabis, 148,000 kg of codeine syrup, 3,244.26 kg of tramadol, 1,544 kg of a locally mixed substance known as skuchies, and 111 kg of methamphetamine, among other dangerous drugs.…READ MORE…

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), who was represented at the event by the agency’s Director of Assets and Financial Investigation, Ibrahim Abdul, emphasized that the destruction of the seized drugs underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria.

“The massive quantity of drugs being destroyed today illustrates the serious threat these substances pose to public health and safety. Our mandate is to ensure they are completely neutralized,” Marwa stated.

He warned drug traffickers that there is no longer any safe haven for them in the country, affirming that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government remains resolute in eradicating drug-related crimes.

“In the past four years, we have successfully prosecuted and secured convictions for 10,572 drug offenders. This momentum will not slow down,” he added.

Marwa also expressed gratitude to Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo) for their continued support of NDLEA’s operations within their states.

The NDLEA Chairman further explained that the public destruction of the drugs is part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability. He noted that laboratory tests are conducted on seized substances to verify their authenticity, and destruction only proceeds after court approvals have been obtained following successful prosecutions.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Olusola Subair, praised NDLEA’s dedication to protecting lives and communities.

He called for greater investment in drug prevention through education, counseling, youth empowerment, and the enhancement of rehabilitation services to support individuals struggling with addiction.
