NDLEA Speaks On Drug That Can ‘Enhance Students Academic Performance’

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a warning to Nigerian students, particularly those at the University of Ilorin, about the dangers of hard drugs, emphasizing that no drug can enhance academic performance.

Mohammad Ibrahim, Commander of NDLEA’s Kwara Command, delivered this advice while addressing reporters at Unilorin on Tuesday.

He emphasized that the consumption of hard drugs does not lead to improved academic performance and, in fact, can have negative consequences.

Ibrahim stated that any temporary perceived benefits from such drugs can eventually harm a student, and thus, students must resist all forms of pressure that may lead them to drug abuse.

Ibrahim also explained that the NDLEA has taken steps to enhance the effectiveness of its patrol teams and increase the presence of officers on the roads to intercept substances entering the state.

He highlighted that the agency’s focus is on the general public, including both youth and adults, as drug abuse affects individuals across all walks of life.

Ibrahim clarified that while NAFDAC oversees licit drugs, NDLEA is primarily concerned with illicit drugs and psychoactive substances, such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, which are fully prohibited by law.

He further detailed that some substances are not banned but are controlled due to their potential for abuse, even though they are intended for medical purposes.

The consequences of drug abuse, according to Ibrahim, can be categorized as social, physiological, and physical.

He explained that the prefrontal cortex of the brain, responsible for decision-making and reasoning, isn’t fully developed until around age 22 or 23.

When substances are introduced, it can lead to distorted perception, impaired thinking, and compromised cognitive reasoning, resulting in risky decisions and adversely affecting academic performance.
