The longstanding “birther” conspiracy theory, which falsely asserts that former US President Barack Obama was not born in the country, has resurfaced on social media in June and July 2023.

The renewed claim suggests that Obama has confessed to being born in Kenya, East Africa.

This claim is based on a blurry 38-second video clip in which Obama is speaking to a group of people gathered around him.

In the video, Obama appears to say, “Some people say that maybe I’m not an American citizen, and some people say, ah, he has a forged birth certificate. Well, first of all, it’s true I’m not an American. I was not born in Hawaii. I wasn’t born in the United States of America. I come from Kenya.”

Certain versions of the video incorporate text that quotes article 2 of the US constitution, highlighting the requirement that only a natural-born citizen of the United States is eligible for the presidency.

However, a close examination reveals that the claims made based on this video are false.

The video in question is an altered clip that originates from a YouTube video titled “Birther’s Delight,” posted over 13 years ago in February 2010.

The description of the video itself indicated that it was a spoof, a hoax, and a parody aimed at satirizing or deceiving viewers.

The original clip was taken from a 44-minute video of Obama speaking to students in Istanbul during his visit to Turkey in April 2009.

In the actual clip, Obama discusses his idealistic goals and foreign policy issues.

He does not make any admission about being born in Kenya.

Barack Obama’s birth certificate, which he released in 2008, confirmed he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961.

He later released a longer version of the birth certificate in 2011 to address conspiracy theories. In 2016, then-President Donald Trump admitted that Obama was indeed born in the US.

The claims that Obama has admitted to being born in Kenya are baseless and are the remnants of a debunked conspiracy theory that has persisted for years.
