NEC Backs Proposed Cost-Of-Living Allowance For Civil Servants, Other Palliatives
The National Economic Council (NEC) has expressed its support for the proposed cost-of-living allowance for civil servants as one of the measures to alleviate the impact of the removal of petrol subsidy.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who presided over the fourth meeting of the council at the State House Executive Council Chambers in Abuja, revealed the resolutions reached during the meeting.
In a press release issued by his spokesperson, Olusola Abiola, Shettima stated that NEC also endorsed the Federal Government’s plan to distribute grains and fertilizer through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to help mitigate the effects of the petrol subsidy removal on the citizens.
The decisions were made following a presentation by the NEC Adhoc Committee on cushioning the impact of petrol subsidy removal, which was delivered by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo.
Additionally, the council supported the mass deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles and the establishment of autogas conversion plants/kits in all states in the short-term. Furthermore, they endorsed the use of electric buses and cars with charging infrastructure nationwide.
The council also encouraged enhanced engagements between state governors and labor union leaders and proposed the provision of cost-of-living allowances for civil servants in both state and federal civil services.
Moreover, they agreed to support the federal government’s efforts to improve infrastructure, particularly in fixing dilapidated highway roads across the country.
