NERC Announces Deadline For Nigerians To Update Prepaid Meters
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has called on individuals using prepaid meters to ensure they update their meters before November 2024.
NERC has emphasized that users who do not update their meters before the specified date will not be able to recharge them.
In a communication on X, formerly known as Twitter, NERC stated that there is no cost associated with updating the meters.

The regulatory body further mentioned that Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) will be providing free token issuance to facilitate the update process.
The announcement post conveyed, “For those with prepaid meters, it’s time for an update. Starting from November 2024, recharging your meter might not be possible without an update. The process is hassle-free and without any charges. DisCos will be distributing 2 free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) that will be used to update your meter.”
The update procedure will not impact the existing units on the meter, nor will it cause the meter to operate at a faster rate than usual.
