NGF Mourns Flood Victims in Niger’s Mokwa Community
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has extended its condolences to the government and people of Niger State following a devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area that claimed at least 21 lives and destroyed property worth millions of Naira.
In a statement issued Friday by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, the forum expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the incident as a harsh reminder of the destructive impact of climate change.
“We are shocked by the scale of destruction caused by the flood in Mokwa and offer our heartfelt sympathies to the victims and their families,” AbdulRazaq stated.
The NGF commended Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the Niger State Government for their swift response and coordination with emergency agencies to assist affected residents.
The forum also pledged ongoing support through partnerships with national institutions such as the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to enhance both relief efforts and long-term resilience strategies.
AbdulRazaq emphasized that the disaster calls for urgent climate adaptation measures:
“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the urgent need to strengthen our disaster preparedness and response systems.”
He urged Nigerians to support government initiatives to mitigate environmental threats and to cooperate with aid agencies currently assisting the Mokwa community.
The statement concluded with prayers for the bereaved families and a call for unity in the face of natural disasters.
