Nigeria, EU Sign €20m Deal to Bolster Culture, Film, and Digital Creative Sectors
The Nigerian government and the European Union have entered into a €20 million partnership designed to revitalize the nation’s cultural economy through investment in museums, film festivals, and digital creative industries.
The agreement was unveiled on Thursday during a high-level visit by Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, to Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the initiative aims to leverage Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage as a driver for economic growth, job creation, and national unity. It also reaffirms the commitment of both Nigeria and the EU to international cultural cooperation as a path to sustainable development.
Part of the project includes plans to produce a national “Unity Song” featuring top Nigerian artists, which will promote social cohesion and address security concerns through music.
In addition, the Ministry revealed plans to host a Creative Economy Summit to bring together major stakeholders in the Nigerian cultural space. The summit will focus on strategic alignment, investment attraction, and ecosystem strengthening.
Minister Musawa emphasized the critical role of data-driven policy and announced that a cultural data mapping exercise would guide targeted interventions and effective resource allocation.
The EU and Nigeria also pledged to prioritize areas such as capacity building, digital skills development, infrastructure support, and youth employment, ensuring that all programs align with Nigeria’s cultural identity and economic objectives.
The €20 million deal marks a significant step in reinforcing the cultural economy as a pillar of Nigeria’s broader development strategy.
