Advocating for $300 (equivalent to N436,500) during negotiations on the national minimum wage. The call comes as the current minimum wage of N30,000 is deemed unsustainable in the face of the skyrocketing cost of living.

Comrade Benjamin Anthony, the Chairman of the Trade Union Side, Joint Meeting of the National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), presented this proposal during the 2023 meetings of the Separate and Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council held in Goshen City, Nasarawa State. The union attributes the urgency of the wage increase to the devaluation of the naira, which has significantly impacted workers’ purchasing power.

Comrade Boma Mohammed, the Secretary of the Union, echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the challenges faced by the working class. He expressed concern over the recent delays in salary payments by the Federal Government, urging prompt resolution of these issues.

The Labour Union’s call for a living wage aims to provide relief to Nigerian workers grappling with the consequences of inflation and currency devaluation. As negotiations unfold, the demand for an increased minimum wage reflects the pressing need to align workers’ earnings with the current economic realities.
