Ningi: Tax Reform Bills Are Biased And Favor Select States Over Others
Former Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), has voiced his opposition to the proposed tax reform bills, labeling them as biased and designed to benefit only a few states, particularly Lagos. In an exclusive interview with Sunday Vanguard,...READ MORE…
Ningi accused the Federal Government of advancing an agenda that overlooks the need for national inclusivity.
The senator expressed concern about the discriminatory nature of the bills, arguing that they disproportionately favor Lagos and two other states, thereby disadvantaging others. He warned President Bola Tinubu not to use fear or silence as tools to enforce policies that go against the will of the people.
Ningi also highlighted the inconsistency of the bills, stating that there was no clear justification for why some states would benefit more than others. He referred to the National Economic Council’s rejection of the bills, which includes the Vice President and elected governors, and questioned why the President insisted on pushing the reforms despite this opposition.
While acknowledging that some elements of the bills might have positive aspects, Ningi compared the situation to the controversial Third Term agenda under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, suggesting that the bills should not be allowed to pass due to the broader implications they might carry.
He urged lawmakers to unite in the country’s best interest and reject the bills, warning that any move to push them through would lead to severe consequences. Ningi emphasized that the proposed bills were unfair, particularly pointing out the disparities in VAT collection, where products processed in Lagos were taxed differently than in other states.
In closing, Ningi stressed that these bills should not be allowed to proceed, calling on his fellow lawmakers to stand firm in opposition to what he deemed a harmful and unjust policy.
